August 2015 Update and New Meeting Day!

The big news this month is our new meeting day and venue.  Please join us at the Parkersburg Country Club on the first Tuesday of the month! This was a unanimous vote at the July meeting, thanks to all of you who made it out last month.  Our next meeting is:
Tuesday, August 4th.
Board meeting 6:30
Social Hour 7 pm
General Meeting 8 pm
Parkersburg Country Club
4910 1st Ave. Vienna, WV 26105
(304) 295-8551
Carl Mayfield, from the Country Club, is super welcoming!  I’ll be sure you get to meet him on Tuesday.  He is working to include information on our club’s meetings in the their club’s newsletter.  We hope that Country Club members walk in to check out the ski club, and hopefully we will gain a few new members! You will be able to order food and beverages.  Just remember that if you choose to use a credit card, it will be an extra 3%, so plan accordingly with cash and checks.
Our July outing with the ski club was a white water rafting trip on the Lower New River, in West Virginia.  Thanks to Sheila Decker for inviting the ski club to participate with Kraton’s group trip.  Check out the video and shots below.  We had a thrilling day.  White water rafting is such a treasure for us, and if you haven’t been, I encourage you to take a trip.  You can’t beat the amout of entertainment you get for the price of a trip.  For an entire day of rafting with a fantastic lunch included, the ticket is around $100.  We did benefit from the group rate.  We rafted with ACE Adventures, and they have great camping, and a lake with all sorts of slides, trampolines, ziplines and other crazy toys to play on!So – what’s the plan for August?  Not sure, come to the meeting Tuesday and let’s pick one.  We can reschedule the Blennerhasset Island trip, we can go rock climbing via ferrata style, or anything in between.Hope to see you there!Nancy Miller

Cancelled – Blennerhassett Island Day – June 27, 2015!

Due to high river levels and the 60% chance of rain on Saturday, we are cancelling the Blennerhassett Island Day.  We hope to reschedule.  Stay tuned!

Join us for a fun day on the Ohio River and Blennerhassett Island!
June 27, 2015
11:00 – 3:00
There are several ways to get to the island!
  1. Meet at the Belpre boat ramps in Civitan Park for transportation to Blennerhassett Island on Don and Dottie Gearhart’s pontoon boat!  Free for ski club members!  Debbie and Jimmy Johnston may also help shuttle with their pontoon later in the afternoon.
    1. Gearharts will shuttle ski club members to the island between 11:00-11:30 and bring back between 2:30-3:00.  If you miss the boat, and need a ride, just call Don at 304-481-1793 and he’ll pick you up.
     2.  Jump on the Sternwheel at Point Park.  $10 per adult, $8 per child  Tickets available at Blennerhassett   Museum.
  1. Kayak, canoe or bring your own boat and meet us there!
Bring snacks or a covered dish to share, and your own drinks.  We’ll pick a place on the island for our food stash to share.

Once you’re on the island you can:
Rent Bikes
Tour the Mansion
Visit the gift shop
Take a horse and buggy cart tour
Walk around the island
Snack bar available

All of the tours are inexpensive.  You can view the rates here.  If you haven’t been to the island, you’re in for a treat.  It’s a small taste of history, and a true gem of a state park right in our backyard.  Plus, thanks to the Gearhart’s, there is free transportation and a chance to hang out on a pontoon boat for a while.
If you’d rather bring your own boat, kayak, canoe or stand-up paddle board, just paddle over!

We were treated to Dan Fowler’s story about the restoration of the island at the June ski club meeting.  Dan’s father, Dan Fowler Senior, was the Archaeologist from Morgantown who was hired to turn the island into a state park.  His unique perspective on the island was interesting and entertaining.  Thanks so much to Dan for sharing his inside view with the ski club.  If you missed the meeting, Dan is a ski club member, so be sure to ask him about it.

So – if you plan to join us, please let us know.  I’d like to get an idea of the amount of members to expect.  Just click here to send me a quick email:

Also, if you have any questions or suggestions, let me know through the email, or call my cell at 740-525-8124.  Or, if you have questions about the island, call (304) 420-4800

Thanks and we hope you can take an afternoon to play and enjoy the river and island!  Bring a friend and introduce them to our club!  Let’s get new members!

Hope to see you there!

Member Spotlight – John Apgar

John Apgar is one of the founding members of the Ohio Valley Ski Club. He and his wife Sharon joined us on the bike ride in Athens, and we got to here some of his great stories.

He said the ski club started out as a bunch of water skiers. One of the guys in the group learned to snow ski, and got the others to try it. John grew up in New York, and skied at an old farm with a tow rope, but it had been at least 10 years since he was on skis when he picked it up with his waterski buddies.

One of their first trips out west was to Big Sky Montana. Then Steamboat became one of their favorites, and they returned often. In the early days, the Ski Club would commendere an entire plane, with over 100 members traveling out west together. The plane ride sounded like it was as much fun as the skiing, most of which would be illegal these days.

Today you can find John on the river – he is an active member and VP of the Ohio Valley Rowing Club. In fact, if you would like to learn to row, let him know. You can call him at 304-464-5213. Lessons start out on dry land, but evenutally he’ll have you in a double. The Rowing Club is also eager to gain new members. If you haven’t seen their facilities in Parkersburg, it’s worth a call to check out the amazing opportunity in your back yard.!

One tip he gives – don’t break a leg!

June member update! aka President’s note in the newsletter.

Hello everyone! We had a blast on the ski club’s bike ride in May.  The weather was perfect for the 2+ hour journey from Athens to Nelsonville. We even had a bicycle built for two on the trip from one of the founding members of the ski club – John Apgar and his wife Sharon!

Kirk even stationed himself on the path on the way back as an oasis with a cooler full of cold water.

Instead of the cookout, we went to Casa Nueva after the ride and enjoyed lunch and a few cold Dos Equis!

A BIG THANKS to Don Bilski for coordinating the ride!

We’d like to get together in June for an afternoon on Blennerhasset Island.  June 27th is a tentative date. Dan Fowler, a ski club member, will be speaking at our June 1st meeting about the Island.  Dan’s father, Dan Fowler Senior moved to the area around 1980 to develop the Island and rebuild the Mansion.  He was the first Executive Director of Blennerhassett Island which later became a State Park.

The event for July is the whitewater rafting trip on July 19th.  Sheila Decker organized the trip with Kraton on the Lower New River with ACE Whitewater.   First come first serve with full payment. Total cost is $95 Includes full day trip with a grilled riverside lunch. Plans have changed from the last facebook post: Transportation is on your own, there will be no bus. Money is due on June 1st – you can pay Sheila at the meeting, but she needs a headcount asap.  For more details and sign up contact Sheila Decker @304-428-9176.

Next up is a Via Ferrata rock climbing in August  I have brochures that I’ll bring to the next meeting.  If anyone would like to volunteer to lead this trip, please let me know.  Email me at you like to ski at Snowshoe, especially if you bought Snowshoe’s Ridiculous Pass this season, let me know.

We have a few ideas for next season. We will also be voting to change the day of the week for the meeting in order to change the venue to the Parkersburg Country Club at the July meeting, so please be sure to come to JP Henries on Monday, July 6th!

Bike Ride in Athens – Saturday May 23, 2015!

The bike ride has been rescheduled to this Saturday!  Kick off Memorial Day weekend with great exercise and great friends.  And, if you make it all the way to Nelsonville (and back), you’ll also have great bragging rights!

Saturday, May 23, 2015.
 Bike ride at 9:30
Picnic at 12:30

To help Don buy the right amount of food for the cookout, please send him a quick email and let him know if you can make it and how many people will be with you:

The weather looks much better for Saturday.  0% chance of rain, high of 78!

Again, this is a great ride.  It’s a paved path that goes from Athens to Nelsonville.  They keep it clean from gravel, and you only have to cross a street occasionally.  You can go as far as you want from a few miles to 34 miles round trip.  The round trip to Nelsonville and back will probably take 2 1/2 – 3 hours.

Thanks and hope to see you there!

Bike ride for May 17 CANCELLED. Help us pick a new date!

Our bike ride on Sunday May 17, 2015 is cancelled due to the thunderstorms in the forecast.

But we would like to reschedule for the following weekend.  The weather looks great then.  Since it’s Memorial Day weekend, we would like to reschedule to either Fridayor Saturday.  We can’t decide.

So – if you would like to join us for the bike ride, please send an email to Don Bilski and let him know what you prefer.  We will make a final decision on the date on Monday, and let everyone know.

Here is the choice:

Friday, May 22, 2015.  Bike ride at 1 pm, then either picnic or head to Casa Nueva afterward.

Saturday, May 23, 2015.  Bike ride at 9:30 and picnic at 12:30.

Please RSVP to Don Bilski at and let him know what you prefer.  Also, if you pick Friday, please be sure to give your vote for cookout or restaurant at Casa Nueva.

Join us for a Bike Ride and Picnic – May 17, 2015 11am

We hope you can join the ski club on a bike ride starting in Athens and going as far as you choose in the direction of Nelsonville.  The path is paved and it’s the perfect time to try it.  I know that ride has been on my list for a long time!

The event is for ski club members – but guests are welcomed and encouraged to come and be active with us!  Guest fee for cookout is $5, but if they join the club, it will go toward the membership fee.
